Suspects arrested for attacking TRNC daily Afrika given prison sentences
The trial against six Turks arrested for attacking Turkish Cypriot daily and the North Cyprus Assembly on January 22 has been concluded today with each of the suspect getting jail terms between 2 and 6 months.
The six suspects, Ahmet Turkmen, Bayram Ak, Mehmet İpek, Umit Tas, Oktay Güney and Abdülhadi Doğan were arrested on Monday January 22 following an attack on the Turkish Cypriot daily, Afrika and the TRNC Assembly. They were charged to a Lefkosa court for unlawful gathering, property damage and violence.
The court judge in her judgement ruled that all suspects were guilty of charges brought against them.Abdülhadi Dogan was sentenced to 4 months, Oktay Güney to 2 months, Mehmet İpek to 6 months, Bayram Ak'a to 3 months, Ahmet Türkmen to 6 months and Ümit Taş to 3 months imprisonment.
There were heavy police presence at the court venue during the court session.
