Near East University block protest by Nigerian and African students amid heavy police presence

The Near East University, Lefkosa on Monday refused Nigerian and other African students in the school to carry out a peaceful protest in honor of a Nigerian student, Kennedy Dede who was murdered in EMU last week but despite the heavy security presence, a brave few fought off the threat to register their grievances.

The protest was organized by the African Student Association in Near East University to demand justice for 28-year-old Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede, an Architecture student at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Magusa who was kidnapped by 7 people on Monday, January, 29 from his resident in Magusa and then taken to the Çanakkale lake in the outskirt of the city where he was seriously beaten and killed.

The university authorities stopped the protest saying they did not follow due procedures.

There were heavy police and campus security presence at the university. All efforts by the Nigerian student leaders and the African Student Association leader in the school to talk to the authorities, yielded no result.

The university securities even seized a banner from the protesters but that did not stop the protest as a brave few lead by the African Student Association president still went ahead to protest without issues while several others backed out.

I salute the courage of all those who stood for their right.
