Italian man arrested after driving through city shooting at black people

An Italian man on Saturday, opened fire on African migrants in the central city of Macerata injuring six people before he was captured, in what police said was a racially motivated attack.

The shootings happened just days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose dismembered body was discovered stuffed into two suitcases near Macerata.

The suspect, identified as Luca Traini, 28, had an Italian flag wrapped around his neck when he was arrested. Onlookers said he made a fascist salute when he was captured.

The suspect who is from the surrounding Le Marche region, did not resist when he was arrested after fleeing from his car near the town's war memorial and is now being questioned. Police said they found a gun in his car.

The shooting had begun two hours earlier at about 11:00 local time (10:00 GMT). The mayor had warned people to stay indoors during the incident, which saw shootings across a number of locations.

The victims are being treated in hospital. At least one of them is said to be in a serious condition.
