Greek Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades wins re-election

Greek Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has been reelected as president of Cyprus for a second term having won the majority of votes in Sunday's run-off election.

Anastasiades won 55.99 per cent of the vote, to defeat independent candidate Stavros Malas who received 44.01 per cent votes.

Following the victory, Stavros Malas, called Anastasiades to concede defeat and to congratulate him.

The people have spoken and their decision is respected, he said.
I would like to congratulate Nicos Anastasiades with whom I have already spoken. I would like to wish him good work ahead of him and to look after Cyprus.

Heads of state and other European officials including French President Emmanuel Macron, Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime-Minister Alexis Tsipras, and Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri have all called to congratulate President Nicos Anastasiades on his victory

Polls closed at 6pm with voter turnout estimated as 73 percent.
