Six men arrested for attcking Afrika news paper

Six men has been arrested for their role in a violent attack on the office of Turkish Cypriot daily, Afrika last week.

The men who were arrested on Tuesday have been remanded in custody pending trial, by order of a Lefkosa Senior Judge.

The men, Umit Taş, Ahmet Turkmen, Bayram Ak, Mehmet Ipek, Oktay Güney and Abdulhadi Doğan were ordered to remain in custody for a maximum of one month while awaiting trial.

Police say they are still searching for nine others suspects who also took part in the attack against the newspaper.

Recall that Afrika news paper were attacked on Monday last week following a publication on Sunday, January, 21 in which it accused Turkey of invading Afrin in Syria.

This caused angry protestors to gather outside the newspaper’s offices throwing eggs, stones and other objects at the newspaper office. The office windows were broken by the protesters who also tore the newspaper’s sign.
