George Weah Elected Liberia’s President

Former Liberia international footballer turned politician, George Weah has been voted as Liberia's 25th president in the just concluded election. 

George Weah clinched 12 of the 15 counties in the west African country. 

Weah who is the senator of Montserrado County – once named FIFA World Player and winner of the much-coveted Ballon d’Or in 1995– defeated 73-year-old opponent Vice President Joseph Boakai in a landslide victory in results announced in Liberia on Wednesday morning.

Joseph Boakai - who has been the country's vice president for the last 12 years, only got votes from two counties.

Weah will succeeds out going president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who happens to be Africa’s first female head of state, economist and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The west African nation, was founded by freed American slaves.

Weah has taken to Twitter to thank all his supporters, saying that he plans to liberate the country.
During his footballing career, Weah played for AC Milan of Italy and Chelsea and Manchester City of England.

He was also named the African Footballer of the Year prize three times.

Other footballers to enter politics include: - Pelé and Zico who both served as Brazilian sports ministers.
