Trump said he rejected being Time’s ‘Person Of The Year’, Time responds
US President, Donald Trump on Friday claimed that he rejected a not-quite-official offer to be Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for the second year running.
Trump who made the claim on Twitter said the magazine had told him he would “probably” be selected as Person of the Year and according to him, “probably” wasn’t good enough.
Time named Trump its Person of the Year last year and in June, The Washington Post reported that several of Trump’s clubs display what appears to be a cover from a 2009 issue of Time with Trump himself on the front. The image, however, is a fake; no such issue of the magazine exists.
Time magazine later responded to his tweet saying, the president was “incorrect.”
The magazine’s editors are the ones who select the Person of the Year, but the publication offers a poll where readers can vote for their pick. As of Friday, Trump only had 5 percent of the vote in that poll. Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, led Trump by 16 percent.
Meanwhile, many Twitter users found Trump’s tweet to be in poor taste, and mocked the president for his “fragile ego” and his “obsession” with the magazine.

Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 24, 2017

The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6, the tweet read.

Don’t forget: Trump has an obsession with TIME.— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) November 24, 2017
He’s complained on several occasions when he hasn’t been chosen for Person of the Year or the 100 list.
He even had a fake cover of TIME featuring him hanging in his golf clubs. https://t.co/MJ1sgJXCuE
If Time’s honoree this year is anything but “WOMEN” just shut the whole thing down. https://t.co/fxxfQ1kFPR— Rich O'Malley (@RichOMalley) November 24, 2017
Trump announcing he passed on being TIME's "Man (Person) of the Year" reminds me of when David French announced he wouldn't be running for president— Olivia Nuzzi (@Olivianuzzi) November 24, 2017
TIME should make Putin "Man of the Year" so Trump's fragile ego will have to do public battle with his treasonous deference 🙄 https://t.co/StWXzt1NXX— Sarah Kendzior (@sarahkendzior) November 24, 2017
I was Time's Person of the Year in 2006. They didn't ask me for an interview or photo shoot. https://t.co/qQK2nzWTi5— Bill Shea (@Bill_Shea19) November 24, 2017
Worth noting that Time is running an online pool about who should be person of the year if you want an idea of Trump's competition https://t.co/m9uhGg53o4 pic.twitter.com/YkOnNWrkTm— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) November 24, 2017
