Mugabe dares party, refused to resign

Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe has ignored a call by his ruling Zanu-PF party to resign or face impeachment as members of party are preparing to meet to discuss his possible impeachment after a deadline for his resignation came and went on Monday.

The embattled long time leader surprised Zimbabweans on Sunday when he declared on TV that he planned to remain as president.

Zanu-PF says it backs impeachment, and proceedings could begin as soon as Tuesday when parliament meets, reports BBC.

A draft impeachment motion published by Zanu-PF after the deadline passed said Mugabe was a “source of instability” who had shown disrespect for the rule of law and is to blame for an unprecedented economic tailspin over the past 15 years.

Students of the University of Zimbabwe have locked down the institution in protest of Grace Mugabe's PhD while a group of people have gathered in prayer at the African Union Square opposite Parliament in Harare.
The crisis began two weeks ago when the 93-year-old leader sacked his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa, provoking Zimbabweans who saw it as an attempt to position his wife Grace as next president.

To this extent, rallies demanding his immediate resignation backed by influential War veterans was staged around the south African country on Saturday.
