Cyprus Talks: Greek Cypriot side’s main goal was to break all bonds and ties between Turkey and the TRNC - Akinci

The Greek Cypriot side’s main goal was to break all bonds and ties between Turkey and the TRNC, and “this was not possible, said Turkish Cypriot president Mustafa Akıncı.

Akıncı made the comments when he met with representatives of civil society organisations who are active in London during which he delivered a conference on the Cyprus negotiations process and the latest developments on the Cyprus Problem, reports Turkish Cypriot media, BRT.

The Greek Cypriot side’s main goal was to break all bonds and ties between Turkey and the TRNC, Akıncı pointed out adding that “This was not possible. We told them. We tried to tell others as well.

Akinci also said that he had devoted all his efforts since coming to office towards achieving a settlement in Cyprus and that it was very clear as to who had prevented a solution from taking place.

This, however, was not mentioned in the UN Secretary General’s report, he said.

Speaking on a next possible rounds of talks, Akinci said it have to be result- oriented, restricted by timetables and deadlines and in a comprehensive package format, adding that the Turkish Cypriot side did not want a new process that would continue for years without achieving any results.

He noted that there were three things Turkish Cypriots cannot abandon in any settlement to be reached, which includes freedom, political equality and security.

The first is our freedom. We cannot come under the domination of anyone. The second is our political equality. The third is our security”, he said, adding that these three conditions also needed to apply for Greek Cypriots.
