Terrorist attack alert: Cyprus joins EU in beefing up security
Police in Cyprus have stepped up security
measures at ports and airports after a Brussels alert about a possible
new terrorist attack against a European country.
The message which is said to have originated from Egypt was sent to Brussels, through Twitter alerting travellers of a heightened risk of terror attacks in Europe. All European countries were immediately informed.
According to Cyprus Weekly, Cyprus police evaluated the situation and increased existing measures.
Police Spokesman Andreas Angelides told Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that for precautionary reasons, the force had given instructions for officers to be on increased alert while additional measures have also been put in place in some areas.
The report say authorities in Cyprus believe the island is not in the list of countries which are classified as High Risk for a possible terrorist attack.
The US Department of State on August 31, alerted US citizens to the continued threat of terrorist attacks throughout Europe.
