Talking Point: Which country is Africa's Best English speaking country
At the moment, the English
language is the global/international language with about 28 countries in Africa adopting it as it's first major language. Over the years, the debate on who is the Best English Speaking country in Africa has often now and then been discussed with no concrete judgement.
To this extent, a study conducted by World Linguistic Society in February this year rated Uganda as the Best English Speaking Country in Africa, followed by Zambia, South Africa and Kenya respectively.
This comes in the wake of a video from a Miss Rwanda contestant that was shown struggling with English in a country that just made a move from Francophone to Anglophone.
English is Uganda’s official language and used in schools, and various institutions in the country. And according to the study, majority of Ugandans can articulate English words fluently than any other English speaking country in Africa. But how true is this?
Surprisingly, an English speaking country like Nigeria did not even make the list. Many Nigerians including me will find it very hard to believe this study, which brings to question, the authenticity of the list.
Lets argue for Nigeria; despite their strong traditional accent, Nigerians are credited for taking the spot for constructing good sentences that are grammatically flawless and bold. You can ask Obayagnon that.
For years, Nigerians have mocked the Ghanaians spoken English and accent, so how come Ghana is on the list and Nigeria isn't? Is it the Zimbabweans or South Africans? that's for another day.
Even South Africa, despite the fact that it is the top African country with the highest number of English-speaking White people, it still could not be ranked number 1 on the list.
Here's the full list according to the study:
