Paper Round: Paul Pogba ready to live up to United's expectations after losing record fee burden, Arsenal set to swoop on Mahrez
It's Wednesday's Paper Round. Paul Pogba is said to be relieved after
losing the weight of expectations placed on him due to last
season's record transfer fee while Arsenal set to swoop on Mahrez.
Pogba freed by Neymar price-tag Wednesday’s papers were all over comments made by Paul Pogba
belying relief to no longer hold the record transfer fee following
Neymar’s move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain. The Manchester United midfielder, who moved to Old Trafford last season for a then record £89
million, said at an event on Tuesday night: “Your first question was
about football, but last season it was about price – so you can see the
difference.”
Paper Round’s view: Mourinho predicted it last year that sooner rather than later the record fee paid to bring Pogba to Old Trafford would been broken. Fast forward to less then 12 months since that transfer, the record has been broken more than double by Neymar's move to PSG. So can we have some peace?
Mutiny over lack of signings at Stamford Bridge The Mirror reports that Antonio Conte’s Chelsea squad are “desperate” for fresh blood at Stamford Bridge. The newspaper
reports that Chelsea players fear a repeat of their dismal 2015-16
season, when the club last failed to strengthen their squad during the
summer transfer window. According to the report, the club remains set on
signing Virgil van Dijk, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Danny Drinkwater before the window closes.
Our View: Chelsea should just sign, sign and sign.
Roses interest the Chelsea The Sun reports that last week’s public enemy number one Danny Rose
is set to head West to Stamford Bridge following his “explosive”
interview with the Sun, last week. Rose, 27, was forced
to back down from comments made regarding his disappointment at Spurs’
lack of signings and trophies as he signaled he would consider other
options. Chelsea are now said to be one of those options.
Our view: After the interview, Ross should have made up his mind to face whatever Spurs will throw at him as punishment. Pochetino claimed he has apologized and has fined but you don't expect it to end there as news also had it that he became an hero among the Spurs team following his media outburst. If Chelsea are able to sign him, that will be a plus for them.
Arsenal set to swoop as Roma cool on Mahrez The Metro reports that Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez
could be on his way to The Emirates stadium after Roma pulled out of a
deal with the 2015-16 Premier League champions. According to the paper,
talks between Roma and The Foxes regarding the 26-year-old broke down
with the Serie A side unwilling to stump up the club’s £40m demand
Our view: The truth is that with little or no interest in Mahrez, he may likely remain at Leicester City until next summer or January at the earliest. Wenger had previously said he is not in the market for another winger and even mention that he is not interested in the winger as his side is blessed with a lot of option there.
