Game of Thrones in trouble as hackers leaks data

If 2017 had to be the year of the cyber attack, HBO would not have imagined that they would soon be a victim of such attack especially at a time when the current season of Game Of Thrones is still airing with over half of Season 7 still to air. The hackers who decided to target the channel, stole about 1.5 terabytes of their data, presumably just to ruin Thrones for the 10 million+ people who watch it religiously.

 

Those responsible have already released data online from other shows such as the upcoming episodes of Ballers and Room 104 — so far, nothing from shows people actually watch. The hackers who are claiming they have the goodies from Westeros, threatened that more is to come.

The company in a statement on Monday announced that they had "recently experienced a cyber incident."

HBO recently experienced a cyber-incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information, a company statement reads.

We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.

Richard Piepler, described the attack as “disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing”. Plepler said specialists were working round the clock to "protect HBO's interests," and given how serious shit is getting in Season 7 of Game Of Thrones, it would be a major shame and a complete disaster if huge spoilers or even complete episodes were leaked online. 

The hackers who described their handiwork as "the greatest leak of the cyber-space era," sent an anonymous email to reporters in the US on Sunday that reads: 

Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it and spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.

Their mothers must be very proud.

The attack is the latest in a line of hacks aimed at major Hollywood companies following Disney being threatened with the early release of Pirates of the Caribbean 5; in April Netflix was targeted with the leak of a new season of Orange Is the New Black.

Game of Thrones remains HBO’s most popular show, with about 10 million viewers having tuned in for the new season’s debut.
