Cyprus leaders to bid UN special Envoy to Cyprus farewell

The United Nations Special envoy to Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide who is set to leave his post as the UN special envoy to Cyprus will on Thursday meet with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci for the last time in his capacity as both leaders bid him fare-ware.

A farewell reception will be organized for the Norwegian diplomat at Ledra Palace on Thursday evening.

Both leaders will be attending the event even though it took days for Anastasiades, who publicly criticised Eide, going as far as to brand him a liar, to accept the invitation reports inCyprus.

Eide will leave his post as Special Adviser to run for an elective post at the parliamentary elections in his country on September 11.

He is also drafting a detailed report on the failed UN-brokered Cyprus peace talks in Crans-Montana, Switzerland last month, as the UNSG’s Special Adviser.

Eide in a written statement, said that he remained convinced the best chance for a mutually-agreed solution in Cyprus is through the established United Nations parameters.
