Cristiano Ronaldo named UEFA Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year for a second consecutive season after he helped Real Madrid win the Spanish La Liga and the Champions League for a second successive time last season.

The Portugal international saw off competition from Juventus 's Gianluigi Buffon and Barcelona's Lionel Messi for the award, which was created in 2011.

The performances of the 32-year-old last season helped Los Blancos become the first club to retain the Champions League trophy, scoring 12 goals in the competition and 25 goals in La Liga.
Barcelona's Messi, 30 scored 54 goals for his club, but only won the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey while Buffon, 39, helped his club to an Italian Double.

The shortlist was selected using votes collected from the 80 coaches of teams in the group stage of either the Champions League or Europa League and 55 journalists put forward by the European Sports Media (ESM) group.

Also Buffon was named the goalkeeper of the season, Sergio Ramos the top defender, and Luka Modric the best midfielder, while Ronaldo was also named UEFA forward of the year, beating Paulo Dybala and, again, Messi for the award.
