Wiz Khalifa's 'See You Again' now YouTube most-viewed video of all time
"Gangnam Style"??? nahhhh..... YouTube now have a new top-viewed video of all time, and the numbers are going higher and higher by the day.
Wiz Khalifa's video for "See You Again" featuring Charlie Puth is now YouTube's most-watched video, with more than 2.9 billion views. That's about 2 million more than the video for Korean rapper Psy's 2012 smash "Gangnam Style," which held the record previously while Justin Bieber's "Sorry" sits in third place, with more than 250 million views far behind the others.
While “See You Again” doesn’t have the same goofy choreography and catchiness that made “Gangnam Style” a viral hit, it does have a few things going for it.
"See You Again" which was written and composed specifically for the movie Furious 7 (the seventh installation of the Fast & Furious series), was released in 2015 as a tribute to late "Fast and the Furious" star Paul Walker as the video is interspersed with Walker’s scenes from the Furious movies.
It quickly vaulted all the way to No. 1 on charts all around the world, including in the US, where it ruled for a dozen nonconsecutive weeks (it was disrupted by Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” which stole the show for a single frame). The song went on to earn Khalifa and newcomer Charlie Puth several Grammy nominations and even a Golden Globe nom, though sadly they didn’t collect any of their awards.
According to a representative for YouTube, “See You Again” is still pulling in clicks left and right, despite the fact that it has now been out for almost two and a half years. The song has continued to collect millions of plays every single day throughout 2017, and when it was first released, it raked them up at an incredible, near-unbelievable rate.
According to BBC, “Gangnam Style”’s view count eventually got so big that in 2014 YouTube had to upgrade its counter from a 32-bit integer to a 64-bit integer. Now, a couple of videos have passed the 2 billion mark, like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars. Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” already has more than 2,485,501,000 views, and the video was just released this year.
