Venus Williams speaks out after she was sued over fatal Florida car crash

US Tennis star Venus Williams is being sued by the family of a Florida man who died after being involved in a two-vehicle crash that police say was the fault of the tennis player.

A civil complaint filed Friday, days before the Wimbledon tournament, claims that Williams was negligent in the June 9 crash near her Florida residence in Palm Beach Gardens.

A 78-year-old passenger, Jerome Barson who was in a small sedan that collided with Williams' larger SUV, died 14 days later on June 22, according to the suit and, separately, the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's office.

While Williams was not given a citation by police for the crash, she was found at fault for failing to yield the right of way, according to a police report filed by the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

Venus finally reacted to the accusation in a Facebook post after she was blamed for causing the car accident that lead to Barson' death.

An attorney representing the Barson family filed the lawsuit on Friday in Palm Beach County circuit court and is seeking unspecified damages. It also states that Barson's injuries included; severed main arteries, massive internal bleeding, fractured spine and massive internal organ damage.

Barson's wife of 35 years, Linda, was also injured in the accident, and the lawsuit claims she suffered a cracked sternum, broke her right wrist, hand and several fingers.
