Lionel Messi commit future to Barcelona until 2021

Barcelona have announced that star player, Lionel Messi has agreed a new three-year contract extension, committing his future to the club until 2021.

Messi's current deal was due to expire in 12 months, and with the new deal in place, the 30-year-old commits to the club until he is 34. 

The deal which sees his release clause rise to €300 million will be the ninth professional contract the Argentina has signed since he moved to the Camp Nou from Newell's Old Boys in 2001.

His new net salary will reportedly go up to £26.4m per season, putting him on over £500,000 per week.

The club is very happy with both the renewal and the commitment of Messi, the best player in history," Barca said in a statement.

He has played his full professional career at Barca and has led the team to an era of extraordinary success, the likes of which has never been seen in world football."

Messi has won 30 trophies with the club, including eight La Ligas and four Champions Leagues. He is also the top scorer in the club's history with 507 goals and has been named the world's best player on five separate occasions.
