North Cyprus, President Mustafa Akinci expressed concern over the increasing number of universities in the country

Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, President Mustafa Akinci has expressed his concern over the increasing number of universities in the country saying it could lead to a downturn in quality of education.

“The increase of the number might not always mean that the result will be good, quality is very important”, Akinci said as reported by Kibris.
Akinci made the remarks at a meeting with the Mayor of Yeni Iskele, Hasan Sadikoglu who was briefing him on developments on the new Near East University (DAU) local campus in Iskele.

Akinci noted that higher education has developed into a very important sector in North Cyprus. Noting for the need for planning in the sector, Akinci said the number of the universities in the country exceeds 30 of which only half of them are active, while the rest of them are at the preparation stage.
“We have around 93 thousand students. This has been turned into a very important sector. I am in favour of serious planning in this sector”, he said.
