Cyprus Talks: Both leaders to meet with UNSG Guterres in New York
Leaders of the divided Cyprus island, Nicos Anastasiades, Greek Cypriot president, and Mustafa
Akinci, Turkish Cypriot leader are set to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
in New York on Sunday, June 4 following deadlock in negotiations.
The spokesman to the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric in a statement said;
Following a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary General,
Akinci had tweeted on Wednesday night that he had accepted an invitation
to meet with Guterres.
The spokesman to Greek Cypriot Government, Nikos Christodoulides also confirmed that Anastasiades had received a similar invitation and were trying to arrange a date for the meeting.
Last week, UN Special Envoy to Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, abandoned attempts at shuttle diplomacy between the two sides following their failure to agree on the framework for a second Cyprus Conference in Geneva but according to the UN, the talks had not collapsed.
The spokesman to the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric in a statement said;
Guterres will meet with the two leaders to “to discuss the Cyprus talks and the way forward.”
The spokesman to Greek Cypriot Government, Nikos Christodoulides also confirmed that Anastasiades had received a similar invitation and were trying to arrange a date for the meeting.
