Cyprus Conference begins in Crans-Montana, Switzerland

Leaders of the divided Cyprus island, the estranged Greek and Turkish communities have embarked on a defining attempt that will shape the future of Cyprus as they aim to reunify the Mediterranean island more than four decades after it was divided by war.

The Cyprus Conference which started on Wednesday morning at Le RĂ©gent Congress Centre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland and being held under the auspices of the United Nations, brings all the key players to the table – including representatives from Cyprus’ guarantor powers, Greece, Turkey and Britain.

The Conference officially started with a press conference held by the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.

It’s a unique opportunity, because after all of these decades of division it is possible, it is possible to solve, and I really hope that this is the spirit by which everybody goes into this meeting, said

Issues bordering on “Security and Guarantees” and all other issues which were not agreed on during the Cyprus negotiations process will be discussed during the conference.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is expected to attend the conference in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a report by CyprusMail say a delegation of ten members of the Unite Cyprus Now Movement has traveled to Crans-Montana to raise the profile of citizens from both sides of the island who would like to see the island reunited.
