Brits heads for polling booths to chose a new leader

Brits heads for polling booths on Thursday to decide who becomes the next Prime Minister to lead the country into the post Brexit era as election gets under way across the country.

A total of 650 Westminster MPs will be elected, with about 46.9 million people registered to vote.

That is up from the last general election, in 2015, when there were 46.4 million registered voters.

The new government is expected to negotiate Britain's departure from the European Union amid increased tension after a succession of terrorist attacks that have left 35 people dead.

Around 40,000 polling stations in churches, schools and other buildings opened, in some cases guarded by armed police.
