Cyprus Talks: Akıncı evaluates Cyprus talks, blames Greek Cypriot side of not putting forward any proposals

Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akıncı on Saturday evaluated the last meeting between the two leaders of the divided Cyprus island and speaking on the stance of the Greek Cypriot side on the talks, he said they are yet to put forward any proposals but instead put forward preconditions.

Akinci made the made the comments in a statement released through his press office, reports BRTK.
According to him, the Greek Cypriot side was manipulating efforts in the hope of creating a new image for themselves.

He said the Greek Cypriot president Nicos Anastasiades has always insisted that he had made very positive and constructive proposal towards the talks but that the Turkish Cypriot side had rejected these.
“It is not possible to remain silent against such ridiculous claims. There were no constructive proposals, only preconditions were put forward for a Geneva meeting to take place” said Akıncı.
“The Greek Cypriot leader proposed that first of all at the Geneva meeting the issue of territory will be completed then the issue of security and guarantees must be fully completed and then at the very end all the remaining issues will be taken up. That’s his proposal” he added.
According to Akinci, this was in complete contradiction to the agreement made on February 11th and also on 12th  January 2017 Geneva Conference final declaration and therefore was unacceptable.

He sounded out that no Turkish Cypriot leader would accept such an understanding or precondition.

He noted that the Greek Cypriot side were yet to accept the political equality of the Turkish Cypriot people or the issue of rotating presidency which is a primary element for an agreement but is instead calling for the issue of territory, security and guarantees to be finalized, such a stance cannot be accepted said Akinci.
