Cyprus Talks: Greek Cypriot side prepared to return to negotiating table immediately - Anastasiades

Greek Cypriot president, Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday reiterated the Greek Cypriot stance that it was ready to return to the negotiations table to immediately resume the Cyprus reunification talks after talks stalled following the decision of the Greek Cypriot parliament to passed a bill for the commemoration of the 1950 Enosis (union with Greece) referendum in public schools.

According to Anastasiades who made the remarks upon his arrival at a luncheon hosted by the Maltese ambassador, he said he hoped there would be grounds for talks resumption in the near future.
“Our position remains that we are prepared at any moment to continue the dialogue that will help us, we expect, achieve a solution,” said Anastasiades.
Both leaders of the divided Cyprus communities, Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci met on Sunday for a social dinner with the UNSG’s Special Envoy to Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide in Nicosia but nothing tangible popped up about talks resumption.

Recall that talks were abandoned in February when Akinci walked out of a meeting between the two leaders as a result of the Greek Cypriot parliament decision that schools commemorate a 1950 referendum advocating Enosis.

Akinci then called for the decision to be revoked before returning to the negotiations table.
