Nigeria ranked 6th happiest Nation in Africa and 95th in the world
Nigerians have been ranked as Africa’s sixth happiest people, and 95th happiest people in the world, according to the new
report released by the World Happiness Report (WHR) that called on nations to build
social trust and equality to improve the wellbeing of their citizens.
Algeria leads the rest of Africa as the happiest country in the continent, followed by Mauritius in second while surprisingly war-torn Libya is ranked third, ahead of Morocco in fourth with another even bigger surprise that saw crisis-torn Somalia sits fifth of the African ranking ahead of Nigeria in sixth and South Africa in 7th with Tunisia, Egypt and Sierra Leone completing the top 10 respectively.
At the bottom of the continent are Benin, Madagascar, South Sudan, Liberia, Guinea, Togo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the worst of them, Central African Republic all making the bottom 10.
The ranking released on Monday by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) as part of the UN World Happiness Day — March 20 assessed 155 countries by their happiness levels.
Nigeria actually moved upward from 103 position in the world and maintained its stand as the sixth happiest country in Africa as indicated by 2016 happiness ranking.
Nigeria’s position showed that in spite of its current economic recession and security challenges, its citizens remained happy.
Norway was named as the happiest country in the world, displacing former number one and three-time winner, Denmark.
Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden completed the top ten countries.
Germany was ranked 16, followed by the United Kingdom in 19 and France 31 while the US dropped one spot to 14.
Among the 155 countries ranked, countries in sub-Saharan Africa, along with Syria and Yemen, are the least happy.
