Cyprus Talks: Anastasaides ready to return to negotiating table ‘tomorrow’

Greek Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said he is ready to return to the negotiating table to resume talks on the Cyprus problem, said his deputy government spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos last week.

According to his spokesman, Anastasiades did not want the progress made so far over the last 20 months to be in vain and “is ready even tomorrow to resume talks, to resume meetings with Turkish Cyprus leader, Mustafa Akinci”.

Talks collapsed in February following tensions that resulted over the decision by the Greek Cypriot parliament to introduce an annual commemoration of the 1950 referendum on the island’s union with Greece (Enosis) in public secondary schools, following which Akinci said he will not return to the negotiations table until the decision has been rescinded.

Meanwhile Anastasiades has proposed that a document be drawn up outlining the realities surrounding the recent development so far said his spokesman who said Anastasiades wanted to make progress with “a targeted process with a view to addressing all disagreements”
