Jay Z makes history, becomes first rapper to be inducted into songwriters Hall of Fame

Hip Hop legend, Jay Z has made history by becoming the first rapper ever to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Songwriters Hall on Wednesday February 22nd announced that Jay Z will be inducted into the Hall at the organization's 48th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner will take place on June 15 in New York.

Jay Z whose real name is Shawn Carter, made history as the first MC nominated for the honour in October, 2016, during his first year of eligibility, and will now cement his legacy as part of the Class of 2017.

Other songwriters to be inducted include; Singer/producer, Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds, Swedish hitmaker, Max Martin, songwriting-production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Gordy, and members of the band Chicago Robert Lamm, James Pankow and Peter Cetera.

Joining the Hall of Fame is a great honour, and one given only to artists who are considered to have "enriched the world's culture", with people like Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan and Marvin Gaye previously making it into the Hall.
Only five songwriters, or songwriting groups, are inducted every year.

Jay Z took to his Twitter handle to share the good news where he wrote:

"By the way, this is a win for US. I remember when rap was said to be a fad . We are now alongside some of the greatest writers in history."

The Songwriters Hall of Fame, which honours the masters behind the music industry's biggest hits, was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and music publishers Abe Olman and Howie Richmond.

Nominees are considered for induction if they have been writing hits for at least 20 years.
