Cyprus Talks: No agreement unless Turkish Cypriots were given political equality - Mustafa Akinci

There would be no agreement unless Turkish Cypriots were given political equality which would consist of effective involvement in decisions and the rotating presidency, said Turkish Cyprus president, Mustafa Akinci after his meeting with Greek Cyprus president Nicos Anastasiades, on Thursday as the two leaders continue to engage in talks aimed at reuniting the divided Cyprus island.
The right thing to do would be for the Greek Cypriot side to declare that the rotating presidency had been accepted, said Akinci, adding that there would be no agreement unless Turkish Cypriots were given political equality which would consist of effective involvement in decisions and the rotating presidency.
He urged the Greek Cypriot side to start preparing its community for this, instead of making contradictory statements.

Akinci also noted that there were still eight or ten very important issues to be solved.
“There are issues around these but if the important ones are solved, the rest will automatically follow,” he said.
Meanwhile Greek Cyprus president, Nicos Anastasiades said after the meeting that a new Conference on Cyprus issue will not hold before March 13.

He also noted that there were significant progress on the issue of governance, adding that there remains much work to be done.
