Azerbaijan's president names wife as vice
Aliyev, 55 who has ruled the oil rich South Caucasus republic since 2003 following the death of his father Heydar in the same year made the announcement on the presidential website.
The post of the vice president was created in 2016 after a referendum on constitutional changes.
Mehriban 52, who is a doctor has held parliamentary role in the country since 2005. She also heads the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
Azerbaijan, a former Soviet state, borders Iran, Armenia, Georgia and Russia and also boast a coastline on the Caspian Sea.
