All you need to know about Manchester united vs Southampton League Cup final


Manchester United will lock horns with Southampton at Wembley in the EFL Cup final on Sunday February 26 in what will be the first piece of silverware up for grabs this season.


Jose Mourinho who is in his first season as Manchester United manager will look to lift the trophy for a fourth time after previously lifting it with former Premier League club on three occasion, the last being in 2015. 

-The EPL Cup was also Mourinho's first trophy when he first arrived in England.

-Manchester United who are currently in top form has lost only once in their previous 24 matches.
-Saints have not conceded a single goal in the EFL Cup this season and have beaten Premier every League opposition in every round of the competition this year.

-Manchester United defeated Northampton, Manchester City, West Ham and Hull to reach the final.
-Saints defeated Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal and Liverpool to reach the final.

-United have won the League Cup four times in their history, and most recently in 2010 and this is their ninth final in all.
-Southampton have appeared in only one final, losing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest in 1979.

-Southampton will be underdogs going into the finals at Wembley.

-The two sides last meet in a Cup final 41 years ago (1976) when a then second tier Southampton shocked United in the FA Cup final to lift the only major trophy in the club’s history.

-Manchester United will be without winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan who suffered an injury in the midweek Europa League clash at Saint Etienne.

-Saints defender Martin Caceres could be handed a Wembley debut following his recent arrival.

-23 teams have won the competition.

-36 teams have appeared in the finals.

-Liverpool have won the competition eight times, the most in its history and appeared a record 12 times in the final.

-If Rooney plays, it will be United captain's fourth final. The record is six, held by Ian Rush with Liverpool and Emile Heskey with Leicester, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Rush holds the record of five wins.

-The biggest winning margin in a final, was 5-0 when Swansea beat Bradford in 2013, and also the most goals in a one-leg final. 

-West Brom's 5-3 aggregate win over West Ham in 1966 is the highest-scoring final all told, excluding penalty shoot-outs.

-Four finals have gone to penalties, including United's win over Tottenham in 2009. Liverpool won in 2001 and 2012 but lost to Manchester City in 2016.

-17 finals have been all square after 90 minutes while eight have been settled in extra time and five required replays, most recently in 1997.
