Burning Issues: Political crisis in Gambia
On this maiden edition of "Burning Issues" on Olomoinfo Blog, we shall be taking a look at the ongoing political crisis in Gambia.
Gambian long time president of 22-years, Yahya Jammeh lost the elections to his opponent, Adama Barrow in the December 1, 2016 presidential election. Though he initially accepted the result and conceded defeat, but he later made a U-turn rejecting the results of the poll and now seeking to have the election overturned in court.
West African Regional bloc ECOWAS and the AU has put pressure on Jammeh to step down on Thursday, January 19, when his tenure will expire and has threaten to take actions against me if he interrupted a successful handover to the president-elect.
To this infect,
-Is there any sense in invading Gambia to force Jammeh to hand power?
-Do you see Jammenh stepping down on his own, come Thursday?
-Is the African Union re-awakening to it's sense of duty?
-Will this dispute create a constitutional crisis in the tiny West African nation?
-Do you see this crisis escalating out of hand?
-Is Gambia or Africa ready for the crisis/fightings that will follow in the event that Jammenh refused to step down?
Let's hear your thoughts on this.

To this infect,
- Nigeria is now considering offering him political asylum,
- ECOWAS are preparing to invade Gambia to force Jammeh to step down.
- The Nigerian Army has also raised an army battalion that would be deployed in troubled Gambia to forcefully remove Jammeh from power if he fails to step down.
- The African Union says it will not recognize Yahya Jammeh's presidency unless he steps aside when his mandate expires.
