Rihad Mahrez wins CAF footballer of the year 2016
Algerian and Leicester City forward, Rihad Mahrez has been named the CAF Footballer of the Year 2016 at the 2016
Glo-CAF Awards held at the International Conference Center, Abuja on Thursday.
The Uganda national football team, nicknamed “The Cranesas” won the National Team of the Year award ahead of Senegal and DR Congo.
Nigeria however won the female National Team of the Year award ahead of Cameroon and South Africa
Mahrez who was one of the
outstanding strikers in England last season won the award ahead of former holder,
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and Borussia Dortmund and Sadio Mane of
Senegal and Liverpool FC and also becoming the first Algerian football star to claim the prestigious award.
Also at the Award, Nigeria and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi won the Youth Player of The Year
award, ahead of Eric Ayiah of Ghana and Charity FC and Sandra
Owusu-Ansah of Ghana and Supreme Ladies.
Kelechi Iheanacho of Nigeria and Manchester City won
the Most Promising Talent award ahead of Elia Meschak of DR Congo
& TP Mazembe and Naby Keita of Guinea & RB Leipzig.
Nigeria however won the female National Team of the Year award ahead of Cameroon and South Africa
Asisat Oshola of Nigeria won the Women’s Player of the
Year award while the CAF Platinum Award was presented to Nigerian President, Muhammandu Buhari.
