More than 64% of Americans want Donald Trump to delete his Twitter account

According to a recent poll carried out by Quinnipiac University which was released on Tuesday January 9, 2017, 64% of Americans want the US president-elect Donald Trump to shut down his personal Twitter account the @realDonaldTrump.

Trump has been using the Twitter account since 2009 and currently has more than 19.6 million followers. 

The poll found that an even larger majority of Americans aged between 18-34, 71%, are in favor of Trump shutting down the account, while republicans are virtually split on the question: with 49% saying Trump should keep the account, while 45% say it should be shut.


Voters identifying themselves as Democrats and independents overwhelmingly want Trump to shut down the account by margins of 80-18 and 65-31 respectively. 

Trump' who has Tweeted more than 34,000 times from the account has constantly generated headlines and controversy with several Tweets.

Trump is likely to inherit the @POTUS, official presidential Twitter account, when President Obama leaves office on January 20, 2017.
