Manchester United top Football Money League, overtake Real Madrid and Barcelona

Manchester United have been ranked as the highest earning club in the world ahead of Spanish Champions Barcelona and last year's top ranked club, Real Madrid in the latest edition of the 2015-16 Deloitte’s Football Money League.

The 20th annual report on the finances of the world's top clubs, placed United who last top the Money League in 2005 above last year's top ranked club, Real Madrid.

Real Madrid had topped the list for 11 years, and were beaten to second place by their Spanish rivals Barcelona by just €100,000.

United went top after becoming the first club to earn more than £500 million in a season, with a club record total revenue of £515.3m, from £395.2 million last year, which is almost £50m more than what Barcelona (£463.8m) and Real Madrid (£439m) earned during the period.   

German side Bayern Munich and English side Manchester City both move one spot up to complete the top five, with French side, Paris Saint-Germain dropping down two places to sixth.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus made up the top 10, each retaining their spot respectively as they all set new club records revenue.

Another English side, Spurs sit in 12th, on £209m, with West Ham and last season League champions Leicester City breaking into the top 20 at 18th and 20th, places respectively.
