Gambia’s president-elect Adama Barrow to remain in Senegal until his inauguration
Gambia’s president-elect Adama Barrow who is presently in Senegal will remain in the west African country until his planned inauguration on Thursday 19th of January, 2017 when the tenure of the present President Yahya Jammeh who has refused to step down, will end.
According to a Senegalese news agency, APS, the move was requested by West African leaders after a summit in Mali last week.
Current President Yahya Jammeh has refused to step down following the victory of Adama Barrow in the December 1, 2016 presidential election, despite calls by several African leaders for him to step down.
Leaders at an Africa-France
summit in Bamako, Mali on Saturday repeated their calls for Jammeh - who
had initially accepted the result to step down voluntarily. Mr Barrow, who present at the summit was referred to as the president.
The West African Regional bloc Ecowas also wants the UN to approve military action in the event that Adama Barrow's inauguration is blocked on Thursday.
