Gambia's parliament voted to extends Yahya Jammeh's stay in power for another 3 months
Gambia's president Yahya Jammeh would remain in power for the next three months after Gambia's National Assembly on Wednesday voted in favor of him remaining in office for the next three months to challenge the election in court.
The new development comes just less than 24 hours after Jammeh declared a nation wide state of emergency after he was due to step down on Thursday and hand over power to opposition leader and president-elect Adama Barrow who won the December, 1, 2016 presidential election.
It is yet to be known if Barrow who is currently in Senegal will be sworn in as Gambia's president come Thursday, January 19 as the National Assembly's resolution almost certainly gives the Jammeh's government the power to prevent Adama's inauguration. The new development comes just less than 24 hours after Jammeh declared a nation wide state of emergency after he was due to step down on Thursday and hand over power to opposition leader and president-elect Adama Barrow who won the December, 1, 2016 presidential election.
