Gambian president Adama Barrow removes "Islamic" from the country's official name

Gambian's new President Adama Barrow, has hit the ground running following his return to the country last week after the exit of former long time leader, Yahaya Jammeh who held power for 22-years and has move quickly to remove the word 'Islamic' from the country's official name as he pledges to reform the tiny west African country.

Gambia will no longer be the Islamic Republic of Gambia, he said, adding that the word "Islamic" was added by the country's former president, Jammeh in 2015. 

Gambia, whose population is about 90 % Muslim, with the rest Christian and animist, will now be known as The Republic of Gambia, said Barrow.

In his first press conference since taking over as president, Barrow, 51 vowed to overhaul the government institutions to make the administration more effective and promised to ensure Freedom of press.
"The rule of the law, that will be the order of the day," said Barrow.
