FIFA approves World Cup expansion to 48 Nations

FIFA Council on Tuesday unanimously approve the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams from the current 32 teams format.

The controversial proposal brought up by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino which will see 16 more nations participate in the global football event, will come into effect at the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA 37 Council members were asked to vote on four proposals including; two involving a 48-team set-up, two 40-team tournaments, or stick with the current 32-team format.

The new format will comprise of 16 groups of three nations each before a 32-team knockout stage thereby increasing the number of games played from 64 to 80 but still within a 32-day schedule.
