Donald Trump sacks attorney general over refusal to defend ban, appoints replacement

US President Donald Trump on Monday fired the acting Attorney General of the US, Sally Q. Yates for betraying his administration after she refused to defend his executive order banning refugees and immigrants from Seven-Muslim majority countries from entering the US.

Ms. Sally had defied the White House when she directed the Justice Department attorneys not to defend Trump's controversial executive order.

Following her sack, Trump replaced her with Mr. Dana Boente, 62, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

"Yates had "betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States," Trump said in a statement announcing the appointment of Dana Boente.

"Ms Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration," he said.

"It is time to get serious about protecting our country. Calling for tougher vetting for individuals travelling from seven dangerous places is not extreme. It is reasonable and necessary to protect our country."

Ms. Yate in a letter to Justice Department lawyers had said;

At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities, nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful.”

In his first move as the new Attorney General, Boente rescinded Ms. Yates’s order.

Meanwhile Trump did not stop there as he went one step further to fire the acting head of US immigration and Customs Enforcement, Daniel Ragsdale replacing him with Thomas Homan but ave no reason for the change.
