Cyprus talks: Turkey’s guarantees must continue - Turkish Foreign Minister

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has stressed the need for Turkey's guarantees to continue in North Cyprus. The minister noted that Turkey is making sincere efforts for a lasting and just solution that protects both sides’ equal rights in Cyprus within the framework of the Joint Declaration of 11 February 2014.

Cavusoglu who said that Turkey is in close cooperation with the TRNC government, maintained that Turkey is always one step ahead of everyone in the Cyprus problem.

The minister pointed out that Turkey’s stance is not to give any kind of concession for the sake of a solution, adding that if a solution is to be reached, there should be a common understanding by both sides.

“Our understanding is there, but the Greek Cypriot side should also exhibit this will. There are still unresolved points on many chapters. Instead of focusing on these, they bring Turkey’s guarantees and security onto the agenda. This is extremely wrong''.

''The Turkish Cypriot people want the continuation of Turkey’s guarantees. They want to feel secure. For us the security of both sides is important of course, if there is going to be an agreement. However, the security of the Turkish Cypriot people and their sensitivities on the other issues are very important to us,” he said.
