Turkish Cypriot unions holds vigil at site of road accident, protest unecessary road deaths

Trades’ Union Platform in Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, TRNC on Friday morning held a vigil at the site of a road accident that claimed the lives of two school girls and a school bus driver which also left seven other students injured, some critically on the Degirmenlik-Kyrenia mountain road, last month.

Those present at the vigil includes the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. A three minutes silence was observed in their honour.

A statement issued by the platform said:
“The unions will continue to fight against an administration which has abolished Daylight Saving Time, thus throwing the whole country into chaos. The labour office is turning a blind eye to illegal workers; the education office is allowing students on unsafe; buses whilst the transport office is not taking enough measures to secure roads.”
In attendece at the vigil was the General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union, Sener Elcil who said:
“We cannot bring back the lost lives here, but there is a lot to be done for the rest.”
Following the incident last month, series of strikes and protest has been staged by students and union in TRNC as they called on the administration to return to daylight saving time (DST).
