Gambia military takes over electoral office

Following the rejection of election results by Gambia’s leader of 22-years, Yahya Jammeh, Gambia's security forces on Tuesday occupied the building of the country’s Independent Electoral Commission, told its chairman to leave and also barred other employees from entering the building, said electoral commission chairman, Alieu Momarr Njai.

"The military came to my office and said I am not to touch anything and told me to leave," he said. "I am worried for my safety."

The 51-year-old leader of the tiny West African country was defeated by opposition leader Adama Barrow who had no political experience.

And last week Friday, said he rejects the result of the December, 1 presidential election -- citing "unacceptable abnormalities" -- and demanded a fresh vote.

Several West African leaders including the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, arrived the country on Tuesday to try to convince Yahya Jammeh to relinquish power to the winner.
