West Virginia mayor resigns after Michelle Obama's racist Facebook post

A West Virginia mayor, Beverly Whaling, has resigned after leaving a comment on a racist Facebook post comparing first lady Michelle Obama to an "ape in heels."

The Clay Mayor had responded to the post on the Facebook page of county employee, Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who has since been placed on leave as director of the Clay County Development Corporation.

Taylor's Facebook post referring to incoming first lady Melania Trump, reads;
"It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels."
Whaling then commented on the post saying:
"Just made my day Pam".
Clay county Council member Jason Hubbard issued a brief statement condemning the post and said racism and intolerance "isn't what this community is about."

The Clay Town Council accepted Mayor Beverly Whaling's resignation on Tuesday afternoon in a meeting and said it would act quickly to name a replacement for the remaining three years of her term.

Meanwhile, Whaling early Tuesday, issued a written apology to news media outlets saying her comment wasn't intended to be racist:
"I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feeling this may have caused! Those who know me know that I'm not in any way racist!"
