Turkish Governor dies in bomb blast
The governor of Derik district, in the largely Kurdish southeast region of Turkey, Muhammed Fatih
Safiturk has died after a
bomb attack on his office on Thursday. Police said they have detained at least 30 people in the investigation.
A youth wing of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), the YPS claimed responsibility for attack in Mardin province which was carried out with an improvised explosive device, wounding three people.
According to Dogan news agency, governor Muhammed Fatih Safiturk was seriously wounded in the blast and was flown by helicopter to hospital in Gaziantep, where he later died on Friday.
Security sources said about 30 people, including staff from the governor's office, have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Police said they were looking into the possibility that explosives were hidden in a bag placed in the governor's office and detonated with a remote, or were sent in a package to the office and exploded on being opened, said Dogan news agency.
Safiturk was recently appointed in July and had been given the additional responsibility running the local municipality as part of moves to replace elected officials from a sister party of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).
