Italian town offers Robert De Niro asylum following Trump win
Hollywood star Robert De Niro has
been offered an asylum by a town in Southern Italy where his great-grand
parents came from, after he jokingly said he would move there should Donald
Trump win the US presidential election.
According to the mayor of
Ferrazzano, Antonio Cerio, the town was “ready to welcome him with open arms”
should he choose to make good his vow.
'If after the disappointment of Trump, he wants to take refuge here, we are ready to welcome him,' Antonio Cerio said.
'Naturally it would be an honour and give us great pleasure,' Cerio said, who was delighted at the publicity his presence could bring for the town of 3,000 residents.
“To welcome someone like De Niro would be an amazing promotion for us on the international stage. This is the right place in which to forget the electoral defeat and avoid having to beat up Trump.”

De Niro made the remark during an
appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel talk show when he was asked whether he still
wanted to punch Mr Trump in the face, as he had threatened to do during the
election campaign.
“I can’t do that now. I have to respect the position,” said De Niro
“We just have to see what he is going to do and how he is going to follow through on certain things… and as we even see now in a lot of cities, there’s a lot of people getting very upset and protesting.”
Speaking on the small Italian town
of Ferrazzano where his great-grandparents emigrated from in 1890, he said;
“I’m going to probably have to move there,” he told the talk show host.
