Former Manchester United player ordained has been ordained Catholic deacon
Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland midfielder Philip Mulryne, 38 was ordained as a deacon on Saturday October 29 in Belfast as he bids to become a Catholic priest.
Mulryne was ordained by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, and is now a member of the Dominican Order.
Mulryne who emerged through Manchester United's academy in the mid-90s playing along side other United stars like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs before going on to make a few first-team appearances for the Old Trafford club earned 27 international caps for his country.
Mulryne later joined Norwich in 1999 and went on to make more than 150 appearances for the canaries. He also played for other English sides like Leyon Orient, King’s Lynn and Cardiff City.
Mulryne who retired from football in 2008, will be officially ordained a priest in 2017.
