Cyprus Talks: Leaders make significant progress, talks to resume in Geneva November 20

Reunification talks between Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci on the thorny issue of territory in Mont Pèlerin, Switzerland, came to a close on Friday, November 11th, 2016 as the two leaders go on a one week break and to resume talks on Sunday, November 20th, 2016 in Geneva.

According to reports by Cyprus Mail, a five-hour session between both leaders on Friday produced “significant progress” but was not enough to close the issue of territory completely but instead, it was agreed that, after the one week break, the two leaders and their delegations will resume talks on territory in Geneva.

The United Nations in a brief statement released after the meeting on Friday said the chapter on territory and all other issues “were discussed interdependently” during the past five days,
“Upon request of the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr Anastasiades, it has been decided by the two leaders to take a recess and reconvene in Geneva on Sunday, 20 November 2016, to continue their deliberations,” the statement read.
“The two leaders, once again, wish to express their gratitude to the Government of Switzerland for its generosity and hospitality in hosting this event and for the invaluable support provided to them and their teams throughout this week.”
The Greek Cypriot delegation has since return to Cyprus on Saturday morning, while the Turkish Cyprus delegations will arrive later in the day, after a stop-over in Turkey.
