European clubs discuss breakaway from Champions League following changes

Leading football clubs from countries including the Netherlands, Denmark and Scotland are currently in talks to create a new trans-European football league following the recent proposals calling for a change in format of the Champions League.

UEFA in August announced several changes to the Champions League beginning from 2018, which includes guaranteeing a place for the top four clubs in the top four ranked countries of the association, an arrangement that leaves only 16 spots for the other countries in Europe.

According to Reuters, the managing director of Danish football club FC Copennhagen, on Thursday confirmed that talks were on going about forming a new league.
“Yes, it’s correct. If we don’t act now, we will see the biggest clubs grow bigger and stronger, while clubs like ours will have increasingly difficult terms,” Anders Horsholt told local newspaper BT
He also suggested that football teams playing in the new league might have to drop out of their domestic leagues.

According to BT, leading football clubs from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scotland which are some of the countries most likely to suffer under the new Champions League plans were taking part in the talks.
