Brazil legend and World Cup hero Carlos Alberto died at 72

Former Brazil captain and legend Carlos Alberto Torres has passed away in his native Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday at the age of 72 following a heart attack.

The defender who is known as the man who scored the perfect goal led Brazil to World Cup glory in 1970, scoring the fourth goal in the final against Italy, a goal that is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikes in world cup's history. 

Carlos Alberto began his career at Fluminense before moving to Santos where he made 400 appearances for the club and also played alongside Pele.

Carlos Alberto captained perhaps the greatest World Cup squad in history to glory in 1970, where they won all of their six games in Mexico after winning all of their qualifying matches. 

His strike in the 4-1 final victory over Italy is believed to epitomize Brazil's style of play.

A third World Cup victory saw his team take the Jules Rimet Trophy home permanently.

Carlos Alberto made 53 appearances for Brazil and ended playing his career at the New York Cosmos in 1982 before he moved into management.

During his managerial career, he coached a host of teams from the 1980s into the 2000s, including Flamengo on two occasions and retired from management with Azerbaijan in 2005.
