Bob Dylan awarded the Nobel Literature Prize in Literature
American singer and song writer Bob Dylan was on Thursday awarded the Nobel
Prize for Literature for "having created new poetic expressions within
the great American song tradition" by the Swedish Academy, drawing to a close the 2016 Nobel season.
Few had expected the Swedish Academy to to extend the award to a genre such as pop music.
Dylan, 74 will become the first person generally seen as a musician to receive the prestigious award for the first time in the history of the awards.
Presenting the awarded $930,000 prize to Dylan, the Swedish Academy said;
Dylan along with the other Nobel laureates, will receive their award on December 10, 2016.
Dylan's songs includes Blowin' in the Wind, The Times They Are a-Changin, A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall, Masters of War, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Like a Rolling Stone which all captured a spirit of rebellion, dissent and independence.
The Nobel literature prize Award, awarded by the Sweden-based body, since 1901, received about 220 nominees that was later reduced to five.
